Charl’s Our Number One In South Africa
Congratulations to Charl Schwartzel on winning the Safari Tour money
list at just 20 years of age. It is an incredible achievement
for one so young with his career still little more than embryo form.
Second place in the South African Open at the weekend to fellow countryman
Tim Clark ensured that Charl could not be overtaken. His success
not only means that he currently tops the European money list, but also
that he qualifies for this year’s Open Championship.
There can be no doubt that Charl, recent winner at Leopard Creek, is
the best player in the world for his age. He is a very special
talent and, as long as he remains dedicated and enthusiastic, can go
just as far as he wants in the game.
Our South African collection really are firing at the same time and
James Kingston continued his consistent streak with tied fourth place
in Durban alongside Darren Clarke, who at one stage did not look like
he would be around for the weekend.
Darren reached the last hole of his second round two shots above the
cut mark, but an eagle got him through on the mark and he then went
on to outline just what a class player he is. The £20,000
he collected went straight towards the tsunami relief fund.
David Howell also collected a top 10 place for a very promising first
effort of the new campaign while Louis Oosthuizen was 12th and I don’t
think it will be long before he loses the second digit of that number.
All in all a very encouraging start to the new year and it shouldn’t
be long before one of our number is lifting some silverware again
