Carlos Caught In Final Act
CARLOS RODILES impressed me with every facet of his game and demeanour during a tremendous climax to the European Tour season The Volvo Masters spoils eventually went to Sweden's Freddie Jacobson, but not until after a battle that went to the fourth extra hole at Valderrama.

Carlos is not only developing into a golfer of the highest order, he is also an extremely nice young man and I expect him to make the big breakthrough next season. I am convinced he has what it takes. If he was slightly disappointed to miss out on his first win, his feelings were nothing compared to those of David Howell, who left the course thinking he had done enough to qualify for the US Open only to discover later that Michael Campbell had edged him out by just £250.
Every cloud has a silver lining and David's came later when Darren Clarke qualified for the US Tour Championship leaving a place to be filled in this week's Seve Ballesteros Trophy in Valencia. Howeller got the call and will now line up in Colin Montgomerie's British and Irish team to face Seve's Europeans. It will be very interesting to see whether Monty can break his duck and finally beat Seve in the singles.
It's another big week for several of our other players in another part of Spain. Justin Walters, who has a major eye operation last September is now benefiting from superior vision and comfortably qualified for this week's Tour School where he will be joined by David Dixon, who shot a last round 65 to qualify on the mark.
Stuart Manley, our latest recruit after his successful Walker Cup exploits, survived a nervous final round to make it through where, among many others chasing one of just 35 cards, they will face fellow ISM stablemates Ian Garbutt and Simon Dyson and Luis Oosthuizen.
We wish them all a successful week and also Sue Cage, wife of our own Stuart, who is soon expected to deliver their first born.
