First At Last For Singh After three years of one-man rule, the world of golf now has a new No.1. Many congratulations to Vijay Singh for accomplishing what seemed impossible not too many five irons ago. Vijay will probably find it just as tough to hang on to the top spot as he did getting there because there is nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal… and Tiger will be hurting a little. Vijay’s feat equalled that he accomplished last year when he persuaded me that I needed to take a long, hard look at my weight. He didn’t like what he saw at last year’s dunhill links championship and said to me: ‘Chubby, you are out of control and must do something about it.’ The Fijiian’s advice was not to eat carbohydrates after noon, but when he saw me again and still fuller-figured at Sun City he again said: ‘What’s happening Chubby. You are not listening to me. You have so much carbohydrate in your body you need no more for at least a year’. Well, I must have listened that time because since then I have lost 42lbs. I may never reach my goal of getting down to about 17st, but I certainly haven’t given up trying. It was very pleasing to see Carlos Rodiles finish in the top 10 in Switzerland after a season where he has been restricted by rib cartilage problems. Hopefully with two events to come in Spain before the end of the year he will accrue enough money to ensure his card for next year. It was also good to see Graeme McDowell continue his rapid climb up the rankings with another top 10 after just missing out on a Ryder Cup berth. He was reasonably realistic about not making the European team, but now believes he will be ready in two years - understanding what it takes to become a member of that elite team. Playing alongside and outscoring Ernie Els over the weekend will also have given him great heart. Many congratulations to Lee Westwood and Laurae and Freddie Flintoff and Rachael on the arrival of their daughters this week. Freddie was also named ICC one-day player of the year - not the first, nor the last of many honours likely to come his way if he stays injury free.
