Darren's Open Diary

Darren’s Open Diary – Day 5, July 13
There is nothing like a 64 to lift the spirit and confidence levels, so it was in a particularly good frame of mind that I sat down to dinner with my wife Heather and fitness specialist Big John Newton last night.

I had hit the ball very well on what was a good day for low scoring and I was pleased to be able to join the birdie frenzy and move up to second place. Shooting low and being the first to record a 12 under aggregate ensured that I was out last today alongside my playing partner of the first two days, defending Open champion Erne Els.
I will look forward to the challenge of eating into his five-shot lead. Heather and the boys, Tyrone and Conor, head back south today, but I will be travelling further north.
I have a company day at Skibo Castle tomorrow and am hoping to get there by helicopter after my round this afternoon. Then I will be returning to my home in the south before moving on to Sandwich on Tuesday.
I’ll play in the afternoon and on Wednesday morning, but I haven’t decided just how many holes I’ll get in.
It all depends on how I feel and the way I’m playing. Hopefully I’ll take yesterday’s form into today and then to Royal St.George’s.
