Darren's Open Diary

Darren’s Open Diary – Day 8, July 16
My coach Butch Harmon was there to meet me when I got on the range, carrying a very interesting device that may well unlock the key to my Open hopes.

Its like a hinge crutch that goes under my right arm with the aim of giving me a bit of width at the top of the backswing. The impact was immediate because it gave me the feeling I have been trying to find for a few weeks. Now Im hoping to be able to take it with me into The Open because it certainly feels good.
I played with Ryder Cup and ISM stablemate Paul McGinley and another Irishman, Gary Murphy, who is playing in his first Open. He was interested in anything I could tell him and it was nice to be able to give him a bit of help.
Back to the ISM house to link up with Heather and the kids and then it was off to our rented home for the week and an early night because of a 5.30am wake-up call.
My first round starts at 7.36 so I wanted to experience the conditions I am likely to face when the worlds greatest championship gets under way tomorrow.
It must have looked as if two Sumo wrestlers were practising as my fitness
coach Big John Newton put me through my stretching exercises on the lawn at the ISM house before breakfast and then I met up with my practice round partners, Davis Love, David Duval and Fred Couples.
Weve had a few knocks together and now its turned into a regular fourball extremely useful for me because they have all won majors and I can still learn plenty from all of them. Its the kind of company I aspire to join and hopefully sooner rather than later.
I already know my strategy for Royal St.Georges and its one I dont think many will be employing. I am going to attack the course wherever possible so it will involve me using the driver more than most.
I must say that I am really looking forward to the challenge this week. I cant think that I have ever been more relaxed or focused going into a major because my preparation over the last few weeks has been spot on.
It will be early to bed again tonight and then its time for the highlight of my season. I intend to make the most of it.
