Whistling Towards Unique Test - 10.08.04
|
My first impression when I arrived at Whistling Straits for the US PGA Championship was: WOW. After one practice round, I changed that assessment to: Unbelievable. This is a golf course the likes of which I have never seen before. We don’t play many par 77 layouts… although this one masquerades as a 72. It is without doubt the most difficult and demanding I have ever encountered at a grand slam event… or anywhere else for that matter. After just four holes, I was looking at the card to see where I got my shots. There are some par fours out here that are more than 500 yards… and they could be into the wind. Anybody who shoots in the 60’s will be very pleased with themselves because there will be others who will just not be able to get round. It is that hard, but I have to say, it is fair. I have never known a course to have so many par sixes. Every week we play there are one or two holes where you could easily shoot high numbers. Here there are at least 10 and probably more. It is going to be a very difficult test, but I’m up for it. At least we feel at home here because it does look like a true links although it does have slightly different grasses on the fairways and greens. You will hear a lot about this golf course throughout the week, but for me it’s just fantastic. | |
