Surprise Birthday Present From Myself - 15.08.04

A level par 72 was not quite what I was looking for on my birthday, but it’s what I had to settle for.
And where on earth the career-best shank came from on 17, I have no idea, but it was right out of the top drawer.
I had just hit a very good three wood from 265 yards to 15 feet and then the very next shot is a Lucy Locket.   It was the second in the last few weeks, but better than the one I had in the Barclay’s Scottish Open.   It was as good a shank with a four iron as you are likely to see - definitely one to be proud of and right out of the blue.
The ball flew about 40 yards right and well short of the green and how on earth my caddie Billy Foster got an accurate yardage I have no idea, but he did and I almost rescued a par.  The crowd’s fantastic reception definitely made it easier to take
Unfortunately my game just wasn’t right today.  I didn’t quite drive the ball that well and I kept missing fairways by a yard or two.  My round was a mixture of everything.
At four back of Vijay I really will have to get off to a good start if I am going to have a chance of winning my first Major.   Hopefully I will be hitting more of those 3 woods than the shanks.
The trouble is, you can’t get too aggressive on this course because if you do, you’ll be packing your bags very quickly.  I’ll just have to hit the fairways and make a few more putts.  There were some today that I was sure would drop, but came across the hole at the last second.
