What Next After Water Torture  - 02.11.04
My entire season was summed up by what happened to me on the notorious 17th hole at Valderrama last Friday.
Standing on the tee, I was six under par, leading the Volvo Masters and looking forward to a wonderful weekend.
Less than 20 minutes later, I was level par having had to scrawl a very ugly 11 on my card following several visits to water.  People may wonder, even high handicappers, how anybody ranked 15th in the world can drop six shots on just one hole.  Let me assure them, it is not difficult on that particular par 5.
Just when all things looked bright and beautiful, an enormous black cloud developed and once more I was left to ponder what might have been in a season of frustration and inconsistency.   Some times I do wonder just how many more knocks I have to take when I am putting so much work into my game.  That’s golf, I suppose.
Well, Vijay Singh is setting the benchmark these days and nobody works harder so I guess it’s more of the same for me and hopefully somewhere down the line, somebody will start dishing out a few pats on the back rather than more blows to my backside.
There are moments when I do wonder if it is all worth the effort, but then I realise I might be working for a living instead of getting richly rewarded for playing a game.  Nevertheless, it is still very frustrating.
At least I have three more big events to rescue my season.     I suppose it was a reasonable achievement to have qualified for the US Tour Championship - getting into the top 30 from just 15 events.  If I can knock this one off this week then my situation and outlook will have considerably brightened.
