Mark Foster ended a three-month nightmare of injuries with a highly commendable performance on his debut in the Open Championship. The Worksop swinger had rounds of 73-73-72-74 to finish tied for 28th at Royal St.George’s where little known American Ben Curtis captured the silver claret jug to the surprise of the golfing world.

Foster finished just nine shots back in a championship that ended with the biggest shock in Open history as Curtis, despite

dropping four shots on his back nine, scraped home by one from Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn and Fiji’s Vijay Singh. ISM colleague Paul McGinley recovered form an opening 77 to finish alongside Foster and both earned the praise of their manager Chubby Chandler. "That was an unbelievable finish after what Fossy has endured for the last few months and Paul showed great character after almost being blown away in the first day," said ISM chief Chandler. "Although Mark won at the beginning of the year, this is almost the re-start of his season and I expect both of them to have outstanding finishes to the season," he added. Darren Clarke entered the front gates with high expectations in his favourite championship, but never really settled on the Kent links and was disappointed to finish in 59th place.
