All four players carded two under par rounds of 70 over the Gary Player Country Club as the elite, 12 man field completed their first rounds. The South African duo of Els and Goosen finished strongly to join Appleby and Westwood at the top of the leaderboard, World Number Three Els completing the back nine in just 33 strokes and Goosen – the World Number Four – birdieing his last two holes to get to two under.
