Westwood Leads European Challenge in Sun City

England’s Lee Westwood trails Australia’s Stuart Appleby by just one shot a the halfway stage of the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City South Africa – with South African Retief Goosen and Zimbabwe's Nick Price just two off the pace at the Gary Player Country Club.

Westwood, who was playing alongside Appleby, led the Australian by one stroke with four holes to play but watched Appleby slip into the lead after finding the water at the 17th and being forced to take double bogey.

That left Appleby atop the leaderboard of the elite 12 man competition on five under par 139 following his second round 69, while Westwood carded a second consecutive 70 for a halfway total of four under.

Goosen and Price were both under par for round two, posting respective scores of 71 and 70 to tie for third place on three under – with Europe’s Number One, Ernie Els, three shots behind those two after a disappointing 74.

Ernie Els
Els’s undoing came at the par four 11th where the 35 year old South African ran up a triple bogey seven, but he is still very much in the running just five shots behind with 36 holes to play.

European Tour Members Sergio of Garcia of Spain and Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobsen are tenth and 11th with respective halfway totals of seven and nine over par.
