Darren Clarke: Asprey Golfer of the Month for August

Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland, who became only the second player after Tiger Woods to win more than one of the World Golf Championships when he captured the NEC Invitational at Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio, has been named as the Asprey Golfer of the Month for August.

Clarke narrowly won the award at the end of a superb month of August for European Tour Members in which Lee Westwood of England rediscovered his winning touch in the BMW International Open in Munich and Adam Scott of Australia recorded his maiden victory in the United States by winning the Deutsche Bank Championship to secure back-to-back victories for European Tour Members on the US PGA Tour.

Westwood’s emotional return to form earned the Englishman enormous support, but in the end the panel gave the nod to Clarke, who has now been successful in two WGC events, having been the first European to win one of the prestigious titles in 2000 when he beat Woods in the final of the WGC – Accenture Match Play at La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, California.

In August, he added the WGC – NEC Invitational crown to his list of achievements, firing rounds of 65-70-66-67 for a 12 under par total of 268 and a four stroke winning margin from American Jonathan Kaye, before claiming a share of ninth place in the following week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.

Westwood ended three years without a title by surging back to form with a tremendous three stroke victory in the BMW International Open, covering the final nine holes in 30 shots for a closing 66, a 19 under par total of 269 and victory over Germany’s Alex Cejka.

That same weekend, Scott and Justin Rose of England flew the flag for The European Tour in the United States. Scott, aided by a second round 62, sealed a four stroke victory over Rocco Mediate of the United States with a 72-hole total of 264, 20 under par, while Rose, who opened with a 63, claimed outright third place on 269.
