Westwood Takes An Open Stance

Lee Westwood

Lee Westwood marched proudly to his best-ever Open finish and then vowed to go even better at the season’s final Major.
“I’ll be very confident going to the US PGA after this,” said Westwood, whose closing and lowest Open round ever, 67, took him to fourth place at Troon.

“I believe the Whistling Straits course is the third links test of the year in the Majors and it gets a bit breezy there.   I’ll be trying to get up on top of the leader board on that one again.  There’s no reason why not”.
Westwood believes he is now close to claiming one the game’s greatest prizes.  “I know my game is good enough to win one.  It’s just a question of getting in there and giving myself the opportunity,” he said.
“I wasn’t quite close enough going into the last round today to really put the pressure on the leaders,” added Westwood, who started the day six shots behind Todd Hamilton and was four behind the American and Ernie Els at the end.
“At least I’m becoming consistent again and it’s always nice to do it on the biggest stage.  I’m close to being where I want to be.   Five years ago I was thinking I needed to make a step up to become a major contender, but then I realised there is no next level.   It’s just doing the right things here and there, fine tuning your game and holing a few putts at the right time.”
