Michael Vaughan joins Team Quorn

England Captain sees nutrition as key

to maintaining form

Old Trafford, 17th June 2004…England test and one-day captain Michael Vaughan announced today that he has signed a brand new, two-year sponsorship deal with Quorn™.

The English batsman, who has scored 11 centuries in 46 test matches and recently led England to their first test series victory against the West Indies in the Caribbean since 1968 and a further home series whitewash against New Zealand, has embarked on a major health and fitness regime in order to ensure he continues to compete at the highest level.

Michael spends long periods on tour observing stringent nutrition programmes designed to ensure he maintains his ideal healthy weight. At home whilst resting, Michael is now eating Quorn on a regular basis to help him maintain his ideal weight, ensuring he returns to England duty in perfect physical condition.

Quorn is the brand name for a range of deliciously satisfying meat-free foods, such as mince, sausages and burgers, all of which contain a nutritious source of protein called Mycoprotein, which comes from the same family as mushrooms and truffles.

Quorn’s range has numerous benefits for top sportsmen, the key being that its high levels of protein and fibre are combined with extremely low fat, allowing sportsmen to balance their energy intake with their energy expenditure. Overall, this means more efficient training and exercise as little time is wasted in training sessions burning off excess fat.

Quorn products have been available for 18 years and over 25 million people have consumed more than 1 billion Quorn meals. With retail sales of well over £100m, the Quorn brand is the number one global meat-free brand, with Quorn products now being sold in Europe and USA, where they have become a popular and well-established choice for consumers.

Michael Vaughan said, “I’ve been eating a number of Quorn products for a while as part of my diet whilst at home. Because they are so low in fat compared to even the leanest meat, I can eat the foods I enjoy knowing that I am not going to put on any weight which would harm my fitness levels. I particularly like the Tikka Massala, the cottage pies, and Quorn’s Swedish Style Balls. I genuinely believe that Quorn plays a key role in helping me to maintain my ideal weight whilst I am at home”.

“We are likely to be playing a minimum of thirteen test matches during 2004. This means that there is consistent pressure on test cricketers to perform to the best of their abilities. For me, batting is all about confidence and I try to make sure that, when I’m on the way to the middle, I am certain that I’ve have undertaken the best possible preparations in every aspect of the game, from the amount time I’ve spent in the nets to having kept to the right diet to keep me in prime physical shape. After all, if you’ve made sure that you covered everything off prior to stepping over that rope, it’s then just down to you and the bowler.”

Guy Longworth, Marketing Director for Quorn, said, “It is with great pleasure that we announce Michael’s partnership with Quorn. Michael is obviously extremely keen to ensure that his body is in the best possible shape to enable him to continue performing at the highest level. The fact that Quorn’s range of tasty everyday foods plays an important role in helping him maintain his ideal weight whilst at home makes him an ideal advocate for the brand, and a great example of how Quorn can help people achieve a healthy weight without compromising on the type of meals that they eat”.

Other leading sports personalities that eat Quorn as part of their dietary and nutritional programmes include three-time Ryder Cup player Lee Westwood. Lee has lost over 30lbs since November 2003 during which time he has eaten Quorn as part of his dietary regime.
