Signing for Collingtree Park is Simple for Simon
Simon Wakefield is to represent Collingtree Park as the Northamptonshire club’s touring professional. Potteries-born Wakefield completed a golfing circle when he signed his deal because it was at Collingtree Park, conveniently located near Junction 15 of the M1 motorway, where he watched his first European Tour event nine years ago. “I remember Mark Roe was the first professional I saw there and Sam Torrance won the event, but even though I went there as part of the England coaching scheme some time later, I never thought that one day I would be lucky enough to represent the club myself,” said 29-year-old Wakefield. “It is an honour for me that a club of the standing of Collingtree Park should invite me to be their professional on tour and I look forward to a long and happy association with them,” he added.
Richard O’Driscoll, managing director of Collingtree Park, added: “Signing an up-and-coming European Tour professional of Simon’s calibre was a natural progression for us considering how we have invested heavily in the future, most recently with a superb new clubhouse. “It is our aim to make Collingtree Park one of Britain’s foremost members and corporate golfing venues and we feel sure Simon will help that development.”
Wakefield, who lives in Newcastle-under-Lyme and is part of the International Sports Management stable, turned professional in 1997 and five years later won his first Challenge Tour event in Italy. He graduated on to the main circuit last season and top 15 finishes at the French Open and Lancôme Trophy events elevated him into the European top 100 with full playing privileges for the 2004 season.
