Close call at Augusta

If anybody was as disappointed as Louis then defending Charl Schwartzel would have come close because he was looking forward to draping the green jacket around his good friend’s shoulders

Louis Oosthuizen and Lee Westwood did their best to ensure our major championship campaign got off to the best possible start at Augusta only to be outdone by Bubba Watson.

It was play-off heartache for Louis as he went down at the second extra hole after his American opponent produced the second best shot of the tournament to claim the green jacket.

Bubba somehow conjured a magical approach from deep in the woods to set up his first grand slam title and deny Louis a second after his 2010 success at St. Andrews.

If anybody was as disappointed as Louis then defending Charl Schwartzel would have come close because he was looking forward to draping the green jacket around his good friend’s shoulders.

Louis' consolation was that he now knows he can handle Augusta after missing the cut on previous visits while entering the Masters and personal record books through his career-first albatross at the par five second in the last round.

Louis should also take heart from the fact that he didn’t lose the 2012 Masters, but Bubba won it and good luck to him.

Lee was once again in the top three at a major and would surely have claimed his first if his putting statistics had come anywhere near his greens in regulation figures. A first grand slam will surely come his way because he has plenty more to go at.

It was a magnificent week among the fir trees and one which builds up our hopes and expectations for the second major in June. We’ll be contending again, of that I am certain.
