Although I felt it just wasn’t meant to happen for Lee this time, I am even more convinced that his day will come and sooner rather than later
There are times in golf when you get the feeling that, for whatever reason, something was not meant to happen.
That’s what I suspected in San Francisco last weekend when Lee Westwood’s ball got caught in a tree and with it went his hopes of the US Open title.
Ironically, it was the very same tree that Lee Janzen’s ball got stuck up during the 1998 US Open at the Olympic Club. The only difference was that Janzen’s ball fell down within the five minutes you are allowed to search for it whereas Lee’s disappeared without trace and had to go back to play another.
But although I felt it just wasn’t meant to happen for Lee this time, I am even more convinced that his day will come and sooner rather than later.
Over the last few years, Lee’s stroke average in majors has been lower than anybody else in the game and with that kind of consistency the reward will eventually come.
Charl Schwartzel did remarkably well to finish at all considering the discomfort he has been feeling with a rib problem which will keep him out of golf until the Open. Simon Dyson and Branden Grace both survived all four days and will benefit from the experience as will Matt Baldwin who thoroughly enjoyed his first US Open.
Elsewhere, there was a very encouraging third place finish for Simon Wakefield at the St Omer Open while Charlie Ford was just one place behind. And there was a top 20 place for Florentyna Parker at the Ladies Swiss Open.
Now it’s the start to the build up for The Open at Royal Lytham where we will have another strong representation all trying to take the silver claret jug off stablemate Darren Clarke, who is expected to return to golf next week in the Irish Open after an extended rest with a groin injury.
