It was so pleasing to see David Howell’s name at the top of the leaderboard after a few years trying to find confidence and form.

Howeller was one of the world’s best and showed many signs in Abu Dhabi that he is more than capable of returning among the game’s upper echelon.

Only a four-putt hiccup on the back nine took him out of contention, but a high finish will surely prove exactly the boost he needs to accelerate his climb back towards the world’s top 50 and those crucial exemption spots.

David was one of four ISM players to claim top 10 slots and nobody distinguished himself more than Branden Grace, who has been spurred by recent successes from his South African colleagues Charl Schwartzel before Christmas and Louis Oosthuizen quick afterwards.

Branden had no fewer than 10 birdies in his last round to move rapidly up the Abu Dhabi rankings while Joost Luiten and George Coetzee also featured prominently. I don’t think it will be long before all three of them enter the winner’s circle.

Now the boys head off to Qatar where there will again be plenty of world ranking points on offer before another pointsfest in Dubai. I have a feeling we will have plenty more to celebrate before the end of the Tour’s Middle East programme.
