I am convinced it’s going to be a great year for ISM and our players
Health as much as prosperity dominates my New Year message after a 2013 which saw many of our golfers suffer debilitating injuries or illness.
For 2014, I wish all our players to have full fitness and avoid all the niggling little problems that prevented them reaching full potential in the last 12 months.
I will be looking for the likes of Peter Uihlein, Joost Luiten and Tommy Fleetwood to continue their rapid upward movement, with the former and latter joining the all-important top 50 in the rankings to guarantee automatic entry into all the big events.
And I expect Charl Schwartzel, Lee Westwood and Louis Oosthuizen to challenge in the majors, with Lee joining the other two in the champions’ club.
Injury free and I expect Chris Wood, David Howell and George Coetzee to push into positions their talent deserves while Danny Willett and Gregory Bourdy will continue to show why both are so capable of great deeds.
And lower down the world rankings we find well-known players ready to return to former glories – particularly Darren Clarke and Simon Dyson. Darren is almost unrecognisable from six months ago having lost a shedload of weight and I hope new glories follow the new look, while I believe it won’t take Simon long to break back into the top 100.
Personally, it was a splendid Christmas with the family and an equally pleasant New Year in South Africa bringing back many wonderful memories of that great country.
Now we head into a new year and my personal hopes are that the game is played quicker and for Europe to follow America and end trial by television.
But one thing I am convinced of – it’s going to be a great year for ISM and our players.
